Monumental Basketball President Michael Winger announced today that Sydney Johnson will lead the Washington Mystics as head coach.
Johnson brings 25 years of basketball experience to the Mystics. Most recently, he was the head coach of Team USA’s 3×3 Women’s AmeriCup team, winning a silver medal at the 2024 FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup. He has been involved with USA Basketball for five years, achieving success with various teams.
“Having spoken with new GM Jamila Wideman, Michael, and leadership – it is clear to me how dedicated they are to helping us win another WNBA Championship,” said Johnson. “As a team, we will uphold the core values of the franchise in everything we do.”
Johnson previously served as an assistant coach with the Chicago Sky and spent eight years as head coach of Fairfield University’s men’s basketball team, earning multiple postseason appearances. He also has coaching experience at Georgetown University and Princeton University.
Alongside his coaching roles, Johnson is the Vice President of Client Success at HD Intelligence, providing analytics and scouting support to Team USA and top collegiate programs.
“Today’s appointments of Jamila and Sydney mark a significant moment for the Mystics and our loyal fans,” said Mystics Owner Ted Leonsis. “I am excited by the vision Michael, Jamila, and Sydney have for the team’s future success.”
