The North Carolina women’s basketball team defeated Miami 69-60 on Sunday afternoon and was surprised by a visit from Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson, a highly decorated player in women’s basketball. Wilson, coming off her third MVP season, was in Miami to watch the game between two elite college teams. Despite not being an alumna of either program, her reputation as one of the top players in the game made her visit to the locker room worthwhile.
The Tar Heels were excited to have Wilson visit the locker room after their victory, and the video captured their enthusiasm.
The North Carolina women’s basketball team, with a record of 13-2 and ranked #17 overall, has been led by Alyssa Gustby (108 points, 8.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists per game) and Gakdeng, who averages 10.4 points and 5.8 rebounds this season. Gakdeng, the top scorer with 21 points on Sunday, took to Twitter after the game to share her disbelief at the win.
A’ja Wilson, not a Tar Heels alumna, played four years at South Carolina, leading the Gamecocks to a national championship in 2017. However, her alma mater did not affect the excitement of the women in the locker room, who were thrilled to meet such a prominent player in the sport.
Wilson’s impressive resume speaks for itself, with recent accomplishments including a unanimous MVP season, setting single-season WNBA records for scoring and rebounding, and being a two-time WNBA champion, two-time Defensive Player of the Year, and three-time MVP at just 28 years old.
Even though Wilson may not have been there specifically to support North Carolina, the team took a photo with her to mark the special occasion.
