WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson recently visited the University of North Carolina’s locker room during her offseason. She arrived as the Tar Heels were celebrating their 69-60 victory against the Miami Hurricanes.
UNC led for the first three quarters, outsociring Miami 62-47. Despite a strong fourth-quarter push from the Hurricanes resulting in a 13-7 score, UNC maintained a substantial lead to secure their win.
After the game, Wilson surprised the college players by congratulating them in the locker room.
“Good win, guys!” Wilson exclaimed upon entering the locker room.
The team was thrilled by her visit and took a photo with Wilson.
Leading the Tar Heels was Maria Gakdeng with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and a 70% free-throw percentage. Alyssa Ustby also recorded a double-double with 19 points, 13 rebounds, and four steals.
UNC dominated inside the paint with 40 points compared to Miami’s 20 and capitalized on second-chance points with 15. Their next game is on Jan. 5 against Notre Dame.
South Carolina Gamecocks announced plans to retire A’ja Wilson’s No. 22 jersey on Feb. 2. Wilson, a former Gamecock star, garnered multiple accolades during her college career, including leading the team to an NCAA championship in 2017.
Wilson’s career at South Carolina saw her steadily improve, culminating in averages of 22.6 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks in her final season. She was honored with numerous Player of the Year awards in 2018.
