2024 Fall Cross Country/Recovery Program, December 30, 2024, Week 3, Day 1, The Third Week of Recovery Begins!

The 2024 Cross Country season is over!

This is the first day of easy running in week 2.

Warm-up well,

30-40 minutes of easy running,

cool-down well,

Our holiday pick of the day is The Lonely Breed, by Ron Clarke with Norm Harris

The Lonely Breed, by Ron Clarke and Norm Harris

One of my favorite books of all times, The Lonely Breed is a compilation of stories about some of Ron Clarke’s most admired.

The story that makes me cry each and every time that I read it is about Jim Hogan, the only Irishman to win the European marathon championships. I met Jim about 2006 and enjoyed several wonderful gatherings with Jim, courtesy of David Bedford and Ian Stewart.

Jim passed away in 2015. The story is priceless.

We really like this book!

To get this book, please check out: The Lonely Breed, by Ron Clarke

Other book suggestions: Self Made Olympian, by Ron Daws, A Clean Pair of Heels by Murray Halberg, Pre! by Tom Jordan.

Big Photo is of John Treacy, who won the World XC twice (Glasgow 1978 and Limerick 1979), and also took the Olympic silver medal in the LA 1984 Marathon!

John Treacy is one of the great ones, a fine cross country runner, and a gutty, gutty distance runner (Moscow 1980, LA 1984, Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992). I recall meeting him at the Boston marathon one year.

Larry Eder has had a 52-year involvement in the sport of athletics. Larry has experienced the sport as an athlete, coach, magazine publisher, and now, journalist and blogger. His first article, on Don Bowden, America’s first sub-4 minute miler, was published in RW in 1983. Larry has published several magazines on athletics, from American Athletics to the U.S. version of Spikes magazine. He currently manages the content and marketing development of the RunningNetwork, The Shoe Addicts, and RunBlogRun. Of RunBlogRun, his daily pilgrimage with the sport, Larry says: “I have to admit, I love traveling to far away meets, writing about the sport I love, and the athletes I respect, for my readers at runblogrun.com, the most of anything I have ever done, except, maybe running itself.” Also does some updates for BBC Sports at key events, which he truly enjoys. Theme song: Greg Allman, ” I’m no Angel.”
