USWNT head coach Emma Hayes dropped her first roster of 2025 today, selecting 26 players for this month’s week-long January camp leading up to the SheBelieves Cup in February.
The camp is held outside of an official FIFA international window, so the roster was limited to players who compete in the United States.
In a move towards the future, Hayes included 13 players with three or fewer caps, including six who have not yet been capped.
Star forwards Mallory Swanson, Trinity Rodman, and Sophia Smith, known as Triple Espresso, were given time off for offseason recovery. Midfielder Rose Lavelle is recovering from ankle surgery and also not included in the roster.
Crystal Dunn, who missed fall friendlies, makes a return to the camp with 155 caps, making her the most experienced player in the roster.
The training camp will take place from January 14th to 21st at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
USWNT Futures Camp focuses on player development
The January camp will coincide with a 24-player Futures Camp showcasing young US prospects. The joint camps aim to foster collaboration, development, and provide scouting opportunities for Hayes and her staff.
“I almost feel like we’ve had a little bit of a lost generation that might not have had some of the exposures that some of the top nations have,” Hayes commented. “We can’t solely rely on domestic play.”
This camp represents the last opportunity for Hayes to see a majority of the playing pool before future selections.
The roster for the Futures Camp will be revealed on Wednesday, January 8th.
Hayes talks whirlwind USWNT tenure
“I’m doing the job the other way around,” Hayes reflected on her short time with the team. “I had 75 days then Olympics, and now I’m getting the opportunity to build the program and develop the playing pool.”
Since officially joining in May 2024, Hayes has led the team to an unbeaten record of 13-0-2 in all competitions.
Outside of national team duties, Hayes had a successful year in 2024, winning major awards such as the Best FIFA Women’s Coach of the Year and the 2024 Ballon d’Or for Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year.
