WNBA champion Sabrina Ionescu shares 1-word message for FIBA gold medalist McKenna Woliczko following season-ending injury

McKenna Woliczko, a top recruit in the Class of 2026 and FIBA gold medalist, suffered a season-ending knee injury in Archbishop Mitty's 61-44 loss to Ontario Christian in the Sabrina Ionescu Showcase on Saturday.

Woliczko shared the news of her injury on Instagram on Tuesday, expressing gratitude for everyone who reached out to her. Sabrina Ionescu also showed her support with a one-word message in the comments section.

Kaleena Smith, the No. 1 recruit from the Class of 2027 (and her opponent on Saturday), also commented: "🙏🏽🫶🏻." "praying for you 🙏🙏," Addie Deal, an Iowa signee who is ranked No. 18 in the 2025 class by ESPN, wrote. "🙏🙏," Iowa's Taylor Stremlow commented.

To Carondelet HS staff, thank you for your immediate attention! Sabrina lonescu ur concern & words of encouragement were heartfelt. Unfortunately I do have a torn ACL requiring surgery. I will continue to push through this setback," Woliczko posted. Her injury occurred when she was fouled by Alanna Neale with Mitty leading 19-17.

Woliczko played a key role in the 2023 FIBA Americas U16 Championship, averaging 11.8 points on 62.0% shooting and 9.7 rebounds throughout the tournament.

One of her standout performances was in the semifinal game against Argentina where she recorded 24 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block.

"Every elite athlete has had to endure injuries in their career," Ionescu said. "I let her know I had a pretty significant (hamstring) injury my rookie season and try to be patient. She’s a great young lady and an excellent player and has a very promising future." The Class of 2026 guard has received offers from top programs including USC, UCLA, South Carolina, and North Carolina.
