WNBA free agent Brittney Griner generated excitement on Saturday with an Instagram post about her role with Phantom BC in the Unrivaled league, despite the team’s slow start caused by the absence of several key players.
Griner shared a photo series featuring her playing on the Unrivaled court in Miami and posing in the tunnel, captioning it:
“Spooky hours in Miami 👻🔥🎯🪜.”
Her wife, Cherelle Griner, chimed in with support, commenting:
“👻👻 very spooky babe !”
Brittney and Cherelle, who met at Baylor University, tied the knot in June 2019. Their family recently grew with the arrival of their first child, a baby boy named Bash, born on July 8, 2024.
The couple has overcome significant challenges, including Brittney’s 10-month detention in Russia on drug-related charges. Cherelle described Brittney’s release in December 2022 as a moment of immense relief.
“I had thought about that moment a thousand times, and I thought I would be full of tears,” Cherelle told PEOPLE. “But I was overwhelmingly happy. It was the first time I was able to finally exhale.”

The 10-time All-Star is meeting with several teams while playing for Phantom Basketball Club in Miami during the inaugural season of Unrivaled, a 3-on-3 professional women’s basketball league. Free agents can begin signing contracts on Feb. 1.
“I want to show off my skills for free agency,” Griner said.
Griner’s Unrivaled teammates include Natasha Cloud, Satou Sabally, Marina Mabrey, Sabrina Ionescu and Katie Lou Samuelson.

She has been with the Phoenix Mercury, who selected her as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 WNBA draft, her entire career. She helped lead Phoenix to a championship in 2014.
In 2024, she played under a one-year, $150,000 deal and helped the Mercury to a 19-21 record, though the team was swept by the Minnesota Lynx in the first round of the WNBA playoffs.
