Brionna Jones is headed for the A, signing a new deal with the Atlanta Dream after spending her entire eight year career with the Connecticut Sun. Alexa Phillipou of ESPN was first with the news. Jones, a former Sixth Player of the Year and Most Improved Player award winner, adds even more depth to the Dream who just signed future Hall of Famer Brittney Griner to the team.Jones was always going to be one of the best free agency acquisitions this offseason. Her rebounding, defense in the post, and finishing ability are some of the best in the WNBA, and they help to alleviate her inability to score from outside the paint. Her 53.8 field goal percentage in 2024 ended up one of her best shooting seasons in her career. Working with Alyssa Thomas and DiJonai Carrington on the floor helped her to truly play to her strengths while with the Connecticut Sun.
She’s one of several players the Sun likely would want to keep on the team as they’re headed towards a potential inflection point. While they cored Alyssa Thomas, their best player, they still feel stuck behind several other contenders with their lack of three point shooting or speed. They have consistently fallen short in the postseason when unable to match up with teams’ shooting, and as they have kept punting their draft picks, their age has begun to show in these matchups, as well.
Jones finished up the 2024 season averaging 13.7 points per game along with 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 steals. She most recently won Most Improved Player honors in 2021 and Sixth Player of the Year honors in 2022. She’s a fairly consistent candidate for Defensive Player of the Year, as well. Jones has yet to win a Finals series with the Sun, but she’d be an excellent veteran to add to a team with postseason aspirations as she has a lot of experience with Connecticut in the postseason almost every single season she’s been in the league.
