Courtney Vandersloot, a multi-time WNBA Champion with her most recent trophy coming with the New York Liberty in 2024, has signed a new deal to return to the Chicago Sky, according to Annie Costabile of the Chicago Sun-Times. Vandersloot became an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and there were no guarantees that she’d be returning to the Liberty for another year. Given her reduction in role and likely the lucrative opportunity to start again for the Sky, where she won her first championship back in 2021. She was drafted to the Sky back in 2011, so it’s a big homecoming for the guard who is second all-time in total assists.
Vandersloot averaged 6.4 points per game along with 4.8 assists and 2.6 rebounds with the Liberty in 2024. She saw her starting role with New York turn into a sixth player role with the emergence of rookie Leonie Fiebich for the team. While it was a good fit for Vandersloot, she likely wished to become a starting guard once again.
Vandersloot is going to be a major veteran presence and leader for a Sky team in need of a major redirection in 2025. The young talent on the roster, which includes Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, is set to get another youth injection as the team holds the third overall pick in the upcoming WNBA Draft. With Vandersloot on the floor, the team will get a rudder on the court, and one with championship experience.
