TACOMA, Wash. – Carly Martin stuffed the stat sheet with a game-high 20 points, five rebounds and five assists, Briana Andrade added 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench and the No. 5 Whitman College women’s basketball team overwhelmed the University of Puget Sound 85-48 in Northwest Conference action on Saturday night.
The Blues (18-1, 10-0 NWC) nearly doubled up the Loggers on the boards to the tune of 25 second-chance points, and shot a scorching 52% from the field and 40% in three pointers. Christiane Carlisle and Korin Baker also did the work, scoring 17 and 16 points, respectively.
Mele Sake and Carmen Cruz scored 14 points and 12 points, respectively, for UPS.
Martin was hot from the start, nailing a pair of three pointers and scoring at the hoop to keep the Blues in a tight early contest. Late in the quarter it was Andrade who began to heat up, sticking a pair of jumpers to extend the lead to seven points by the end of the first quarter.
The Blues kept it rolling in the second quarter and ballooned the lead to double digits for the first time after a Carlisle three pointer with 6:55 to play until halftime. Carlisle would squash any potential opportunity for the Loggers as the half neared, draining multiple three pointers to push the lead to 16 points by the break.
Whitman blew the roof off with a dominant run in the third quarter. Back-to-back three pointers from Martin and Carlisle spearheaded a 14-2 run and the Blues never looked back.
Whitman is back on the road again next weekend with games at Willamette and Lewis & Clark.
