Hornets back bid for WNBA to return to Queen City

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – The Charlotte Hornets are backing a move for the WNBA to come back to the Queen City.

The WBNA recently filed a trademark application for the name Charlotte Sting and there is currently a bid for an expansion team by the Berman Family and the Hornets are backing that bid.

The Hornets released the following statement:

Hornets Sports & Entertainment believes strongly in the future growth of women’s basketball and the WNBA. The Charlotte Sting have a storied history and a passionate fanbase within our community. We are proud to back the Berman family and be a part of this larger group that is bidding to bring the WNBA back to Charlotte.

The Charlotte Sting was one of eight original teams in the WNBA. The Sting played from 1997-2006.
