Israil Madrimov looks ready for his upcoming fight against WBC interim junior middleweight champion Vergil Ortiz Jr. on The Last Crescendo card on February 22nd in Riyadh. The former WBA 154-lb champion Madrimov (10-1-1, 7 KOs) showed off his movement and quick combinations in a video clip at the Ring.
Madrimov’s awkward style and mobility could give Ortiz Jr. (22-0, 21 KOs) fits, but he’s going to have to be more willing to brawl to get a decision win in this fight. Madrimov didn’t throw enough in the later rounds in his last fight against Terence Crawford, and he let the 37-year-old beat him by a close 12-round unanimous decision.
The “Little GGG” Factor
Israil had the advantages of youth, power, size, and mobility over Crawford. But in the end, he lost because he did not throw enough punches in the second half of the contest. Terence was busier in rounds 9 through 12, which was the difference.
Nicknamed ‘Little GGG,’ Madrimov must fight more like him to win against Ortiz Jr. because he’s going to get outworked by him, and the judges will give it to the younger guy based on activity. Madirmov has been fighting for a long time, and he should be able to improve his game when he notices flaws. He didn’t make adjustments last time, but this might be a better style against Vergil Jr. He’s not as talented or brainy as Terence.
If Madrimov can mimic Gennadiy Golovkin in this fight, he’s got a chance to knockout or score knockdowns of Ortiz Jr. He’s coming off a grueling fight against Serhii Bohachuk on August 10th and was dropped twice in that contest. Fans think Vergil Jr. should have lost the fight because he was outpunched. If that fight took something out of Ortiz, Madrimov has the single-shot power to put him on the deck and possibly knock him out.
