Jelena Ostapenko delivered a stunning performance to end Iga Swiatek‘s three-year dominance at the Qatar Totalenergies Open, defeating the world number two in straight sets. The Latvian needed just 68 minutes to secure a commanding 6-3 6-1 victory, advancing to her 17th career WTA final and maintaining her flawless record against Swiatek.

This semifinal result marks Swiatek’s most lopsided defeat in nearly two years. The last time she lost so decisively was against Elena Rybakina at the 2023 Indian Wells tournament, where she fell 6-2 6-2. Coming into Doha, Swiatek had won 15 consecutive matches at the event and was pursuing a fourth straight title. However, Ostapenko’s aggressive, fearless play put an abrupt end to that streak.

Ostapenko, currently ranked 37th in the world, has now beaten Swiatek in all five of their encounters, making her the only active player with a positive head-to-head record against the Polish star. The Latvian’s dominance over Swiatek began in 2019, with their first meeting in Birmingham when Ostapenko won 6-0 6-2. Since then, she has consistently found ways to disrupt Swiatek’s rhythm with her powerful groundstrokes and aggressive returns.

The match began with Ostapenko asserting her intent from the very first point, blasting a forehand winner and breaking Swiatek’s serve immediately. Her relentless attacking style resulted in 24 winners compared to Swiatek’s seven, while her 15 unforced errors were remarkably low given her high-risk strategy.

Swiatek did manage to break Ostapenko’s serve once in the second set, but it was merely a brief interruption in the Latvian’s march to victory. Ostapenko quickly regained control, sealing the match with a flurry of winners and leaving Swiatek visibly frustrated, as evidenced by the Pole tossing her racquet in exasperation.

This loss is particularly significant given Swiatek’s dominance at this event in previous years. The three-time Doha champion had seemed almost unbeatable on these courts, but Ostapenko’s tactical precision and mental fortitude shattered that aura of invincibility.

With this victory, Ostapenko moves into her fourth final at the WTA 1000 level or above and her second in Doha, having first reached the final here in 2016. This achievement also marks her first WTA 1000 final appearance in nearly seven years, highlighting her resilience and ability to compete at the highest level despite recent ranking fluctuations.

Looking ahead, Ostapenko will face Amanda Anisimova in the final. The American advanced by defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3 6-3. Their only prior meeting was also in Doha, back in 2022, when Ostapenko emerged victorious in a three-set battle. (photos: Jimmie48)
