WASHINGTON (7News) — The Washington Mystics have traded two-time All-Star Ariel Atkins to the Chicago Sky, the team announced Sunday night.
In a press release sent to 7News Sports, the team stated it has acquired the third-overall pick in the 2025 WNBA draft, as a result. Additionally, the Mystics receive the right to swap a 2027 first-round pick (Washington’s own with Chicago’s own) and Chicago’s second-round pick in the 2027 WNBA Draft.

Atkins was drafted by Washington as the seventh-overall pick in 2018. One year later, she was instrumental in bringing the Mystics’ first and only WNBA Championship to the nation’s capital. Atkins was the last remaining member of that title team.
In seven seasons, Atkins has recorded career averages of 13.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game.
In the release, General Manager Jamila Wideman stated the team’s intention to build a program that can sustainably and consistently compete for titles in the years to come.
“Trading Ariel, a champion and celebrated Mystic, is one of those difficult decisions,” Wideman said. “In exchange, we are afforded another opportunity to select a young impact player at the top of the draft who can be part of our aspirational future.”
As a result of the trade, the Mystics now have the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 picks in the 2025 WNBA Draft, which is April 14.
