Even before Caitlin Clark’s debut in the WNBA, Kelsey Plum had praised the younger athlete. “I’m super happy for her, she can have it. I think it’s really cool to see her do it in the fashion that she’s doing it, bringing attention to the game… She’s a baller. She’ll be great.” Despite the praise, the latest Sparks star recently went on a rant to defend herself in a post involving CC. Unknowingly, she became a part of a social media trend, which the fans later pointed out to the 2x WNBA champion.

“Dawg could have been CC, could have been my grandma. coaches made me pick up full court and deny the ball back, I tried 😂 (btw if you watched the Olympics/ world championships, when you play team USA, this is the style) k leave me alone bye 😂.” The reply from Plum was a revert to a video of her guarding Caitlin Clark. The 3x WNBA All-Star made it clear that her defensive full-court press would have been the same against any player.

But what she did not know was the video from the user was not to mock Plum. In fact, the social media user posted the video in defense of Caitlin Clark. It has over 6.8 million views and the caption was “WHY YOU PRESSING WHY YOU BOTTING.” A netizen clarified, “This was about botting in a poll yesterday. She’s not yelling at you 😂.” What’s the poll, and why does it involve both Kelsey Plum and CC?

First of all, the clip is from last year’s All-Star game between Team WNBA and Team USA. It was the former Hawkeyes debut WNBA All-Star Game, as she dished out a game-high 10 assist. But the top vote-getter among all the All-Stars failed to light up from her shooting. Four points on 2-of-9 shooting in 26 minutes of action. The Fever guard also missed all seven of her attempts from deep. Now that we have the context of the clip, let’s look at fans explaining to KP about the social media poll.

Kelsey Plum unknowingly drags herself into a social media mess as Caitlin Clark fans help her out

This all started as Stats Muse on X had a “Muse Madness”. This meant that fans’ accounts dedicated to one player had NCAA style knockout matchups. The only way to win is to amass more votes. Since it did not involve the players directly, one netizen replied to Kelsey Plum, “oh nooo baby this wasnt actually about you😭😭😭.”

The final round was between Caitlin Clark Muse and Steph Curry Muse. The former muse account on X won, despite a staggering amount of votes coming in very late for the Curry Muse account. Another user provided this clarification for the Washington alum. “KP, they were referring to a poll that was done on here. Nobody questioning how you played. Us CC fans know you got the dawg in you. Nothing but love.” Because of these late votes, many believe the Curry Muse account was using bots to drive up their votes (although the Curry Muse account vehemently denies this).

Another Caitlin Clark fan made sure to send some love to the former Aces star. “that tweet was about the Muse Madness yesterday 😭😭😭🤣😭🤣 not a shot at you hahahahahah and you come to indy KP HAHAHAHAHAHHAA.” In the All-Star game, CC did not have her best game; Kelsey Plum played 13 minutes, scoring nine points, grabbing two rebounds, and dishing six assists. Despite her effort, team WNBA took home the victory against Team USA, 117-109.

Even though the 30-year-old was successful in stopping CC, fans called the moment iconic. “Yesterday there was a twitter poll between curry muse and Caitlin muse and curry fans botted the poll so they could win the caption has little to do with the all star game tho it was an iconic moment.” Seeing the previous bond between the two and no bad blood or back-handed comments during the WNA, a fan shared love for Plum. “This clip was used as a meme about being “pressed”. It wasn’t about you or CC specifically. We all love ya KP!”

Plum had the right to defend herself, as the clip is recycled every few months since it is a meme trend. But it was also nice of fans to remind her about the trend and not attack her personally!
