WNBA star subtweets reporter over Paige Bueckers announcement

Paige Bueckers declared for the WNBA Draft Friday, March 28, and perhaps no one is more thrilled about it than the Dallas Wings (and Arike Ogunbowale in particular). The Wings have the first overall pick in 2025 and Bueckers is largely expected to be drafted first.

But Bueckers’ declaration came after weeks, if not months, of speculation by fans, members of the media, and even people directly involved in the WNBA. On March 19 reporter and author Howard Megdal suggested Bueckers might bypass the league altogether this year.

“For instance: she can declare for the draft, but make it clear to the Dallas Wings that she will not sign with them. At that point, it is the Wings on the clock — even if Bueckers and the Huskies win a national title on April 6, and Bueckers takes the full 48 hours, that’s a good six days until the April 14 draft,” he wrote.

“And the reality is, that’s more than six days, potentially — in this scenario, they hold Bueckers’ rights for a full year. Critically, though, not after next year’s draft, so they’d need to make a deal, eventually, to take advantage of those rights (and end what would otherwise keep the franchise in suspended animation).”

“Bueckers, though? She can do virtually anything she wants. She can sign overseas, get a seven-figure deal in the Turkish leaguem,” he continued. “She can sign a deal for a video podcast to follow her around the world attending sporting events. She can monetize TikToks she makes with Azzi Fudd. The world belongs to Paige Bueckers.”

Buecker’s presumed new teammate Arike Ogunbowale appeared to gently poke fun at Megdal’s suggestions following the UConn guard’s announcement Friday. “I thought the plan was to travel the world & make tik toks?!” Ogunbowale tweeted.

Naturally, the basketball community was ready for her. “SOON!” the Dallas Nation account replied alongside a photo of Bueckers and Ogunbowale wearing Wings jerseys. Plenty of fans also chimed in with reaction GIFS and tweets of agreement.

Though Bueckers is most definitely entering the WNBA this year, one can hope her prolific TikToking will continue — and that Ogunbowale will join her.
