The South Carolina Gamecocks are headed back to the national championship game after a hard-fought win over powerhouse Texas, 74-57 for their third win over Texas this season. The Gamecocks are looking for the fourth national championship in school history.
Te-Hina Paopao led the Gamecocks with 14 points, while Joyce Edwards scored 13 points and grabbed down 11 rebounds.
After the game, freshman Joyce Edwards gave props where they were due, not only to her teammates but to former Gamecock and reigning WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson.
Edwards told ESPN, “The reason we are here is because of her,” as Wilson looked on.
“It’s crazy for her to see a full circle how her legacy is inspiring other girls just like me to come out here and play, “Edwards said.
This season, Edwards and those around her have noted the similarities between the freshman and the Aces superstar. The two play the same position, they both chose a school at home, and similar statistics.
Although, Edwards is only a freshman, it will be fascinating to see how far she goes.
It is the first time in the school’s history that the Gamecocks have made it to back-to-back national championship game.
The Gamecocks will play UConn for the national championship on Sunday, April 6, at 3 p.m. EST at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.
