Chennedy Carter’s foul on Caitlin Clark

Chicago Sky’s Carter shoulder checked Indiana Fever’s Clark during a game on Saturday, knocking her to the ground.

Chennedy Carter, a standout guard who spent four seasons in the WNBA, made a significant impact during her time with the Chicago Sky. Known for her explosive scoring ability, she led the Sky in points during the 2024 season, averaging a career-high 17.5 points per game. A dynamic presence on the court, Carter’s talent was undeniable. Yet, despite her strong performance, her WNBA future remains uncertain as she faces a turbulent period in her career.

Impressive Stats but Controversial Moments

Carter’s talent was evident in her scoring, but her time in the 2024 season was marked by more than just numbers. During a June 1 game against the Indiana Fever, Carter became involved in a controversial incident with Caitlin Clark, the Fever’s rookie sensation. Carter committed a flagrant foul that sent Clark to the floor as the Sky narrowly lost 71-70. The aftermath of the foul was overshadowed by Carter’s defiant post-game comments. When asked about the incident, she bluntly stated, “I ain’t answering no Caitlin Clark questions,” which created a stir in the WNBA community. While her scoring prowess remained strong, the incident led to questions about her conduct and its impact on her future in the league.

Despite the incident, Carter finished the season strong. Her 17.5 points per game made her the top scorer for the Sky, and she averaged solid numbers overall: 14.6 points per game on 47.3% shooting, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists over her WNBA career. However, her one-year contract with Chicago expired, and she was not re-signed for the following season, leaving her future in the WNBA in doubt.

Waiting for a WNBA Shot

Now, with the 2025 WNBA season approaching, Carter remains unsigned and still awaits another chance in the league. Despite her strong scoring ability and solid performances in her four seasons, the combination of her off-court behavior and a perceived lack of discipline may be keeping potential teams at bay. As training camp approaches, Carter continues to look for an opportunity to return to the WNBA and prove herself once again.

Moving Beyond the WNBA: A New Opportunity in Mexico

While awaiting her next shot at the WNBA, Carter has decided to play overseas and has signed with the Adelitas De Chihuahua in Mexico’s Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional Femenil (LNBPF). The team, which finished with the best regular-season record in 2024, reached the finals but fell short of securing the championship. Carter’s addition is expected to strengthen the team’s offense as they aim for a better result in the upcoming season. This marks Carter’s first time playing in Mexico, but it’s not her first international experience. The former Texas A&M star has previously played in leagues in Turkey, Poland, and China. Most recently, she played for Wuhan Shengfan in China, where she averaged an impressive 31.4 points per game, solidifying her reputation as a prolific scorer. As Carter embarks on this new chapter in her career, she will continue to stay sharp, with the hope of eventually finding her way back to the WNBA. For now, the international stage provides her an opportunity to stay active and showcase her skills while awaiting a shot at a possible return to the league that first made her a star.
