Manchester United have officially confirmed the signing of Matheus Cunha as the Brazilian international becomes the club’s first signing of the summer window.
The Wolverhampton Wanderers forward had emerged as the Red Devils’ primary transfer target after Ruben Amorim had personally approved a pursuit.
Cunha has enjoyed a superb campaign with the Midlands side, scoring 15 goals and providing six assists in the Premier League this season.
By comparison, no United player reached double figures in the league, while the senior striking partnership of Rasmus Hojlind and Joshua Zirkzee combined for a paltry seven goals between them.
As such, reinforcements in the forward line were considered an urgent priority amongst Old Trafford executives with Cunha identified as the perfect antidote to the club’s misfiring attack.
The 26-year-old attacker’s contract at Molineux contains a £62.5 million release clause which United have triggered. They will pay the total sum across three payments of £20.85 million over two years.
Cunha’s salary with Wolves was thought to be around £120,000 a week but this will now jump to £200,000 a week once he swaps his gold shirt for a red one.
United officially announced the deal had been “agreed” on their website, revealing the club has “reached agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha.”

The release states the “Brazilian forward’s signing is subject to visa and registration,” though these are both formalities and expected to pose no issues to the deal.
United’s budget is believed to be in the region of £100 million before any sales. It’s a testament, therefore, to how strongly the club’s coaching staff and executive structure believe in Cunha as a player that they have directed the bulk of this towards him.
Cunha is expected to wear the famous number ten shirt at Old Trafford – currently held by Marcus Rashford, despite the England international’s loan to Aston Villa – which further evidences the faith United hold in their new attacker.
