WNBA History Made During Mystics-Fever Game on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The Washington Mystics pulled off a thrilling 84-78 win over the Indiana Fever on Tuesday night, and it wasn’t just another WNBA game, it was historic. While the Fever missed the presence of star rookie Caitlin Clark, sidelined with a left quad injury the Mystics’ rookie duo of Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen stole the show in a big way. For Indiana, Kelsey Mitchell held it down with 24 points and 2 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to stop the red-hot Mystics.

Washington’s rookie pair made WNBA history by becoming the first duo since A’ja Wilson in 2018 to each open their careers with eight consecutive double-digit scoring games.

Citron, the sharpshooting guard out of Notre Dame, dropped 13 points, added 1 assists. Meanwhile, Iriafen continued her dominance in the paint with 20 points and 9 rebounds another double-double in a growing list.

Iriafen also became just the second rookie this season to reach 100 total points, joining none other than her teammate Citron. That’s right the Mystics rookies are putting up historic numbers together. Their chemistry and impact have been pivotal for Washington early in the season, with both players already pushing their names into the WNBA Rookie of the Year conversation alongside Dallas Wings star Paige Bueckers.

Citron is nearly shooting her way into the elite 50/40/90 club, while Iriafen’s relentless rebounding is keeping the Mystics competitive.

With Caitlin Clark expected to return soon, the Rookie of the Year race just got more exciting. But for now, Citron and Iriafen are making it known, this year’s top rookies wear red, white, and blue.
