Jenni Hermoso has broken her silence after missing out on the Spain squad for Women’s Euro 2025, by hitting back at comments from manager Montse Tome.

Spain’s record goalscorer was left out of the 23-player squad despite featuring in all of their qualifying matches. However, she has been left out of the Spain squad since October 2024.

Hermoso, who has scored 57 goals in 123 international appearances, played a vital role in Spain’s World Cup triumph in 2023.

During a press conference to confirm her 23-player squad which omitted Hermoso, Tome explained that the decision was a sporting one.

Tome added, as per AS Sport: “I understand that she is angry for not being called up when she feel she has to be.”

The Spain head coach added that she has a “clear conscience” over her choices for the 23-player squad.

She added: “I try to be respectful, I have always been, I have given my arguments, I have a clear conscience and I know that I have worked professionally. We have followed Jenni in her team with the help of information from her coaches.”

Hermoso, who plays her football for Mexican side Tigres, has fired back on social media.

Jenni Hermoso fires back at Montse Tome after Euro 2025 omission

Jenni Hermoso took to social media platform X to address comments from Spain manager Montse Tome, after being left out of the Euro 2025 squad.

The 35-year-old appeared to reference comments from Tome about having a ‘clear conscience’ regarding Hermoso’s omission.

Hermoso tweeted: “I really also have a very clear conscience and even more so when I remove environments with such bad energy from my life.

“Manage? That’s what others should learn to do, that part is too big for them.”

Hermoso added that she wrote the tweet as it was the “only way left to have a conversation”.

She concluded the message: “Let her focus now on making Spain European champions, although alone they would also do it and surely much better.”

A number of Spain supporters responded to the tweet offering their support to Hermoso.

@mandryanaa wrote: “It’s a shame that Spain has such incompetent people at its helm. Even though it has such good players. Always keep your head up. You did things well. Thanks to you, people raised their voices, and thanks to you, Spain won that World Cup.”

@GoalGoddess added: “You’ll always be part of the Spanish national team, whether you’re called up or not. You’re football history, and no one can change that, even if it hurts a lot. Thank you for everything, Jenni.”

It is not the first time that Hermoso has appeared to hit out at Tome.

Last month she tweeted: “Tired of hearing my name among so much falsehood. Saying things head-on and as they really are shouldn’t be so hard. There’s no need to beat around the bush when you can get straight to the point.”

Jenni Hermoso’s history with the Spanish national team

Jenni Hermoso is one of Spain’s greatest-ever players after scoring 57 goals in 123 international appearances.

The former Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain star played the majority of the 2023 World Cup, which Spain won after a 1-0 victory over England.

However, she was involved in controversy after the match when she was kissed on the lips by Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation.

Rubiales was found guilty of sexual assault and ordered to pay €10,800 (£9,154). Hermoso in her testimony insisted she had not given Rubiales permission and that the incident “stained one of the happiest days of my life”.

She was left out of the Spain squad after the incident but returned in a 1-0 Nations League win over Italy in October 2023.

Hermoso played all six of Spain’s Euro 2025 qualifiers, but has not featured for her country since October 2024.
