Bol 51.95 WL, Wanyonyi 1:41.44 WL, Lyles defeated Tebogo MONACO (MON, Jul 12): Three meeting records and two world leading marks (+ one equalled) highlighted the Meeting International d’Athlétisme Herculis EBS (Wanda Diamond League). Noah Lyles in his first serious outdoor appearance this season defeated Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo. Next Diamond League meeting is set for London on Saturday 19 July, next week.Event by event reviews

Women

100m: Julien Alfred powered to a clear victory in 10.79 (-1.4) ahead of Jacious Sears (11.02) and Zoe Hobbs (11.12).

400m: Marileidy Paulino reeled in Aaliyah Butler in the last 10 metres for victory, 49.05 to 49.09 PB. Nickisha Pryce and European champion Natalia Bukowiecka also broke the 50 second-barrier with season’s bests of 49.63 and 49.72 respectively.

1000m: Nelly Chepchirchir became just the fourth athlete in history to break the 2:30-barrier, winning in 2:29.77 (1:58.41 split at 800m) to move to fourth on the world all-time list. Addison Wiley overhauled Jessica Hull in the late stages for second, 2:30.71 to 2:30.96 with both athletes setting American and Oceanian records. Mary Moraa was dead last in 2:48.67.

100m hurdles (Diamond+): Megan Tapper continued her resurgent season with victory in an equal lifetime best of 12.34 into a 1.1 m/s headwind with Ditaji Kambundji second in 12.43. Olympic champion Masai Russell was a beaten fourth in 12.57.

400m hurdles (D+): World lead and yet another meeting record for Femke Bol who clocked 51.95, the fifth fastest time of her career. Dalilah Muhammad continues to roll back the years in second in her best since 2021 of 52.58, also a world V35 record, with Olympic silver medallist Anna Cockrell third in 52.91.

Shot Put: Jessica Schilder had the beating of world champion Chase Jackson, 20.39m to 20.06m, in the sixth round. Sarah Mitton also broke the 20 metre-barrier in third with 20.00m.

Men

200m (D+): In his first 200m of the season, world champion Noah Lyles had the beating of Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo – 19.88 (-0.8) to 19.97.

200m U23 (non-DL): Australia’s Gout Gout clocked 20.10 into a significant headwind of 1.9 m/s.

800m: Another super-fast race with Emmanuel Wanyonyi winning in a meeting record and world lead of 1:41.44 ahead of world indoor champion Josh Hoey (1:42.01 PB) and Djamel Sedjati (1:42.20). Australia’s Peter Bol improved from 1:43.79 to 1:42.55 to smash the Oceanian record. World champion Marco Arop and Slimane Moula also broke the 1:43-barrier with 1:42.73 and 1:42.86 in fifth and sixth respectively.

5000m: Solo run for Yomif Kejelcha who won in 12:49.46 (7:39.47 split at 3000m) ahead of a fast-finishing Jimmy Gressier in 12:53.36. Mohamed Abdilaahi finished fourth in 12:53.63 to break Dieter Baumann’s German record of 12:54.70 which had stood since 1997. European record-holder Andreas Almgren was a DNF just after the 3km mark.

3000m steeple: Soufiane El Bakkali was run down on the last lap by Japan’s Ryuji Miura but countered off the last barrier to win in 8:03.18 to 8:03.43, a national record for Miura. Also lifetime bests for Kenya’s Edmund Serem (8:04.00) and Morocco’s Salaheddine Ben Yazide (8:06.44) in third and fourth respectively. Frederik Ruppert fell at the start and was only 14th in 8:24.68, while his compatriot Karl Bebendorf was seventh (8:08.21 PB) as the best European.

110m hurdles: Back-to-back Diamond League wins for Trey Cunningham in 13.09 (-0.9), leading a US 1-2-3 from Cordell Tinch (13.14) and Ja’Kobe Tharp (13.17).

High Jump: Sanghyeok Woo cleared 2.34m on his first attempt to equal the world lead set by Oleh Doroshchuk during the indoor season, and tried once at 236 and twice at 237. Another good competition for Jan Stefela who cleared 2.32m to finish second.

Pole Vault (D+): Another meeting record of 6.05m for Armand Duplantis before three unsuccessful attempts at a world record of 6.29m. Emmanouil Karalis and Kurtis Marschall both cleared 5.92m to finish second and third on countback.

Triple Jump: Jordan Scott improved his lifetime best to 17.44m and then 17.52m (1.9) in the fifth and sixth round respectively. Yasser Mohammed Triki was second with a season’s best of 17.23m (1.4). All top three finalists improved in the sixth series.
