Los Angeles Sparks Are Emerging Playoff Contenders

The Los Angeles Sparks are in the midst of turning their season around, as they have now won five consecutive games. The Sparks got hot right before All-Star weekend and are continuing to push the envelope. It’s not about how a team starts, but it’s how it finishes, and right now the Sparks are showing us they will fight with every team in the WNBA and are fighting for a potential playoff spot as well.

Sparks Offensive Breakthrough

The Sparks currently average 85 points per game, and for them to be hitting over their average during the streak (97.2 ppg) is a major win for coach Lynne Roberts. The Sparks also have the fifth best offensive rating in the league with 104.7, and will welcome back Cameron Brink to the fold, who is now cleared to play after a serious ACL injury.

Sparks have now won 5 in a row.

All of them have been with 90+ points of offense, too — a franchise record.

The Sparks have been reliant on a balanced starting five, with four of the five players averaging double digits in points:

Kelsey Plum averaging  20.1 points and 5.9 assists
Dearica Hamby averaging 17.6 points and eight rebounds
Rickea Jackson averaging 13.6 points
Azurà Stevens averaging 14.9 points and 8.6 rebounds.

Right now the Sparks’ offense is hitting on all cylinders and they only seem to keep getting better. Coach Roberts put it best after the recent win against the New York Liberty:

“But, part of learning to win is learning to just stay steady, and not get too high or too low or panic, right? We didn’t.”

Being able to stay steady and consistent has been key for the Sparks, who are also shooting the ball at an elite level. Currently, L.A. is second in the league for both field goal percentage and 3-point percentage. In four of their five wins the Sparks have shot at least 50 percent or higher from the field, and 40 percent or higher from outside the arc. This is an offense that in June was shooting 30.6 percent from beyond the arc and 43.7 percent from the field. For the month of July, the Sparks are shooting 50.4 percent from the field and 40.7 from three, which are both league bests for the month.

The Sparks defense has also been getting better as the season progresses. L.A.’s defense is second worst in the league (88.3), however they were able to hold four out of the last five opponents under that average.

The Sparks are hot at the right time and now find themselves in the mix for the chance at the eighth seed. If the season were to end today, the Washington Mystics would be holding that spot at 12-13, with the Golden State Valkyries at nine at 11-13, and the Sparks No. 10 at 11-14. The Valkyries are dealing with a major injury to Kayla Thorton, and the Mystics have been pretty inconsistent. This leaves the Sparks with a prime opportunity to sneak into the playoffs.

The Sparks have the talent to make a run for the playoffs, and the execution in the win over the Eastern Conference leading New York Liberty was head-turning.

Looking ahead, the Sparks do have some tough matches coming up, but with the team being as confident and motivated as it is right now, it wouldn’t be a big surprise to see the winning streak continue.
