On Friday morning, the Kansas City Chiefs returned to the practice field at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph for the ninth full practice of the team’s 2025 training camp.

This was one of 17 sessions scheduled for the team’s practice field next to MWSU’s Spratt Stadium. Seven of the remaining practices will be open to the public — click here for details and a full schedule — while one more will be open only to the team’s Season Ticket Members.

Arrowhead Pride analyst Caleb James was there.

After a heat wave created miserable practice conditions earlier in the week, Friday delivered a much more comfortable day to St. Joseph. As practice began, temperatures were in the mid-60s.

Harrison Butker dialed in

Placekicker Harrison Butker was one of the first players on the field — and after getting warmed up, he was dialed in.

After missing portions of the 2024 season with injuries, he now appears to be fully healthy.

Xavier Worthy back in action

The second-year speedster missed time earlier in the week after he was reported to have suffered a concussion. But on Friday, he walked down the hill fully padded and ready to go.

Patrick Mahomes wasted little time getting Worthy involved.

After practice, head coach Andy Reid said that doctors had determined that Worthy never had a concussion.

Speaking of Mahomes…

Here’s your daily reminder: It is his world. We are all just living in it.

Inside run

The Chiefs began their crosswork period with a long stretch of inside runs where the offensive and defensive fronts battled it out.

Lined up across from Kingsley Suamataia, Chris Jones made a nice play, standing up the second-year guard and knocking him into the backfield. He didn’t get the stop, but he did force the run to the outside, where teammates were ready to make the tackle.

Overall, the defense won the period, stuffing the offense at the line of scrimmage on multiple plays.

Rookie defensive end Ashton Gillotte made a few nice stops, showcasing his physical play by stuffing a pulling guard — and then getting the stop.

Two-minute drill

The team started the 11-on-11 period with a no-huddle drill. Mahomes wasted no time finding his favorite target.

Tyquan Thornton continued to work with the first team. Mahomes made an acrobatic pass to him for a big gain over the middle of the field, putting the offense in field goal range.

After a few struggles in the inside run, Suamataia came back with a nice 1-on-1 pass protection snap against Jones, giving Mahomes enough time to make a downfield completion.

Extremely impressive rep from Suamataia going against Chris Jones 1v1 in pass pro. Held Jones out long enough to give Mahomes time and washed him up the field.

The first-team offense would go on to score. When the second team came out, defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah made his first big play of camp with a nice twist look.

FAU would have blown up Minshew. Good twist look for what would have been a sack.

Josh Simmons watch

The first-round rookie tackle looked fine in most of his work, more than holding his own in Friday’s 11-on-11 periods. There was, however, a 1-on-1 pass protection drill where Mike Danna got the better of him.

Here, Simmons comes out of his stance, but barely misses his strike on Danna. The savvy veteran takes advantage, throwing a nice rip move to bend the arc. Simmons tries to hook Danna, but it would have been a holding call.

Still, the rookie continued to build momentum, turning in another solid day. A crafty veteran like Danna can take full advantage of the smallest lapse in technique.

Drue Tranquill left early

The linebacker appeared to injure his back in a team period. (After practice, Reid said it was a back strain). Before this, he had been having his best practice of the camp, recording a fantastic rep where he intercepted a pass while covering tight end Kelce.

Tranquill did leave the field in the front seat of the cart — a positive sign — but this will be something to monitor.

The next practice will be at 9:15 a.m. Arrowhead Time on Saturday. As always, we will have live updates after it begins. When it is over, the team will sign autographs, while special teams coordinator Dave Toub will be among those speaking to reporters.
