Tempe, AZ – Throughout 2024, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (“ITA”) conducted its first review of the Division I collegiate tennis rankings algorithm and procedures since its inception. Based on this review, the ITA then shadow tested the recommendations during the 2025 season with a small group of coaches. From this shadow testing, the small group of coaches elected to advanced those recommended changes to the Division I Operating Committee, where they received approval for implementation beginning in the 2025-2026 season.
The following changes will be made to the ITA Rankings Procedures.
Ahead of each computerized ranking, every team/singles player/doubles team will begin as unranked.
The algorithm will then be run an indefinite amount of times, until it begins to cycle.
The points from the rankings within that cycle will be averaged together to determine the rank order for that week.
For more details on the process and timing of the review, as well as a more visual explanation of the changes, and the justifications for making the changes, please view the below video.
A review of the rankings algorithm for DII, DIII, and NAIA is currently underway.
