Crafty southpaw counterpuncher Ryusei Kawaura (14-2, 9 KOs; amateur 38-14), 114.75, retained his WBO Asia Pacific junior bantam belt as he defeated Joe Shiraishi (12-2-1, 6 KOs), 114.5, by a unanimous decision (98-92 twice, 97-93) over ten fast-moving rounds on Tuesday in Tokyo, Japan. Making his second defense since dethroning Tetsuro Ohashi last August, Kawaura controlled the contest with his speed and counterpunching skills almost all the way except in the final session when the champ was forced to clinch and grab the desperate challenger to avert his final surge. This title bout was abruptly reduced to ten rounds from the stipulated twelve rounder because of a couple of ring tragedies very lately having occurred.
