BH Built Their Ultralight as an Every-Stage or Even-Lighter Climber’s Bike for La Vuelta

One bike, two completely different vibes. BH’s Pro Conti team Burgos Burpellet BH got a wildcard entry to return to the Vuelta a España this year. And to mark the occasion, BH built up two versions of their flagship aero-inspired Ultralight Evo all-rounder road race bike. The first build is all about standing out in the bunch, pulling the flashy pink from the team’s colors. But when the mountains inevitably come in the Spanish Grand Tour, Burgos has a stealthier look, shedding most of that pink paint weight to tick the bikes down right at the UCI minimum.

Burgos Burpellet BH has been racing the latest Ultralight Evo since it launched in its latest incarnation back in 2023 – updated with improved aerodynamics that also boosted both rider comfort AND performance stiffness at the same time. It also still manages to live up to its name, with a claimed frame weight of just 750g, while also getting up-to-date road racing geometry and clearance for at least 30mm tires on modern wide rims. In every way, it looks to be a top-tier race bike, plenty capable of racing head-to-head alongside the fanciest bikes in the pro peloton.

But to give their Conti Pros extra motivation to fight for stage wins – and more time in the spotlight – CH decked the team out in some fancy paint jobs.

The mostly-black bikes though, are just for the days in the mountains.

BH again explains the second climbers-only finish… “this BH Ultralight completely dispenses with paint to leave the carbon exposed, achieving a timeless, sophisticated finish with a clear advantage: weight savings“. The raw black carbon bikes are said to tip the scales at 6.89kg complete (size S. That includes 28mm tires with TPU tubes inside, Power2Max power meters, Look Keo Blade Ceramic pedals, 2x Race One X25 Carbon bottle cages, and an adjustable angle out-front GPS mount.

So, how much more does pink paint weigh?

We often hear bike brands talk about their raw paint jobs saving weight, but it’s less common to get quantifiable numbers. You see, to cover that dark gray, almost black carbon with a light & bright paint job, like this pink, it takes a good (read: thick) primer layer, then some thick pink paint to get that lustrous shine.

BH tells us that pink paint adds 180g. Alone, that doesn’t sound like all that much. But we’re talking about a 750g raw frame here, and 300g fork (claimed). So adding 180g is adding 17% more weight to the frameset. Or more importantly, sticking with the raw finish means ~1050g for the frame set vs. 1230g… almost a 15% weight savings, just in aesthetics.

What that also means, though, is that the pink bikes are still light. About 7kg with a power meter, pedals, a pair of cages, and a GPS mount is no slouch. I’m sure it would still fly up the roads, and definitely won’t slow down the slightly heavier sprinters, puncheurs, and domestiques on the Burgos Burpellet BH team over the next couple of weeks.
