The Dodgers announced that Smith left the game with a right hand contusion.
Smith suffered the injury when he was hit by a foul ball in the bottom of the second inning. The foul tip hit him directly on the right hand, which was resting on the side of his leg. Here’s a video of the play:
The Dodgers will provide a further update after the game when manager Dave Roberts speaks to reporters. Smith will likely undergo further testing before the team reveals his next steps.
Smith is in the midst of another dominant season for LA, hitting .296 with 17 home runs, 61 runs batted in and an OPS of .902. If he’s forced to miss time, rookie Dalton Rushing would take over catching duties on a full-time basis.

Hopefully for LA, though, this is nothing more than an injury scare and Smith is able to rejoin the team sooner rather than later. The Dodgers entered Wednesday’s game with a three-game lead over the San Diego Padres in the National League West.
