Ryder Cup 2025: Donald Backs Familiar Faces for Tough Bethpage Test – Golf News
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Luke Donald has doubled down on continuity by selecting almost the same line-up that delivered Europe’s emphatic Ryder Cup victory in Rome two years ago. Eleven of the twelve players from 2023 return to the squad, with only Rasmus Hojgaard added as a rookie, as Europe look to reclaim the trophy on American soil for the first time since 2012. Donald believes a stable core offers the best chance of success against a resurgent United States at Bethpage Black this September, where the hostile New York crowd is expected to play its part in shaping the contest.

The European captain confirmed six picks to complete his line-up: Shane Lowry, Jon Rahm, Sepp Straka, Ludvig Åberg, Viktor Hovland and Matt Fitzpatrick. Together, they join a squad stacked with experience, including Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose, who were both part of the famous ‘Miracle at Medinah’ away victory. Donald stressed that while continuity is valuable, the strategies and pairings employed will be adapted to the unique demands of Bethpage. “It’s a different animal,” he said, noting the challenge of playing away from home against a strong American side led by Keegan Bradley.

The Ryder Cup is not only a sporting spectacle but also a significant focus for fans engaging with online betting. Many punters are turning to the best European betting sites for competitive odds, broader market choices, and the convenience of placing wagers from anywhere. Unlike traditional high-street bookies, these platforms provide instant access to live markets, including in-play odds on pairings, match-ups, and even specific hole outcomes. Current prices show the USA at 8/13 to regain the trophy, while Europe are priced at 6/4 to achieve back-to-back victories. For those who believe in another nail-biting draw, the odds stand at 12/1.

Europe’s hopes rest heavily on their star names delivering under pressure. Jon Rahm, who thrives in the Ryder Cup environment, has been in steady form across the PGA Tour this season and is tipped to be a key player once more. Viktor Hovland, widely regarded as one of the most consistent ball-strikers in the game, is expected to partner Rahm in foursomes. Shane Lowry, who delivered crucial points in Rome, has embraced his leadership role within the squad and will bring both grit and experience to the away test.

Much attention also rests on the emerging talents within the team. Ludvig Åberg, the Swedish prodigy, has quickly risen to become one of the most exciting prospects in world golf. His inclusion offers Europe a fresh energy, and Donald has hinted at deploying him strategically alongside experienced partners. Rasmus Hojgaard, meanwhile, steps into the role once occupied by his twin brother Nicolai. As the only rookie, his integration will be closely monitored, though he is expected to handle the pressure given his pedigree on the DP World Tour.

Bethpage Black itself adds an extra dimension to the challenge. The New York course is renowned for its length, punishing rough and demanding greens. With crowds that are fiercely partisan, the atmosphere promises to be as influential as the fairways and bunkers. Donald has prepared his team with this in mind, noting that previous European sides have struggled in such conditions. The Americans, energised by their home support, will look to impose themselves early, making the opening sessions critical.

Despite the daunting task ahead, there is optimism within Team Europe. The blend of seasoned campaigners and emerging stars offers a balanced unit that has already proven its capability under Donald’s stewardship. The captain has emphasised the importance of flexibility in pairings, suggesting that while many combinations worked in Rome, different tactical approaches will be required to neutralise the American threat.

The psychological factor cannot be ignored either. Europe’s win in Rome has reinforced belief within the camp that they can match the Americans in intensity and performance. Rory McIlroy has spoken openly about the unfinished business of winning away, while Justin Rose, the elder statesman, has urged his teammates to draw upon the memories of Medinah as inspiration. For Donald, it is about keeping the team united while adapting strategies to the fierce American environment.

The Americans, captained by Keegan Bradley, are expected to field a formidable side with a blend of major winners and emerging talents of their own. Their task will be to harness the home support without letting pressure stifle performance. Bradley has already underlined the importance of momentum, and the first tee atmosphere at Bethpage is likely to set the tone for a thrilling contest.

For European fans, the build-up is a chance to relive past glories while speculating on the potential pairings and strategies Donald will unveil. Betting markets reflect this anticipation, with punters seeking value in individual player points tallies, session outcomes and outright results. While the USA remain slight favourites, Europe’s continuity and chemistry ensure that this Ryder Cup will be anything but straightforward.

With the contest fast approaching, all eyes now turn to New York. Donald’s reliance on a tried-and-tested core may ultimately prove decisive, but the away Ryder Cup remains one of the toughest challenges in sport. Victory at Bethpage Black would not only end a 13-year drought on American soil but also cement
