Lewis Hamilton gives verdict on Ferrari strategy at Monza, admits undercut on George Russell was needed

Lewis Hamilton shared his thoughts on his impressive comeback at the Italian Grand Prix, offering a candid assessment of Ferrari’s strategy at Monza. The seven-time world champion climbed from tenth on the grid to finish sixth, securing crucial points for the Constructors’ Championship, but he was realistic about the team’s current pace and the choices made during the race.The weekend was particularly special for Hamilton, marking his first Monza in Ferrari colours. Unfortunately, his race was affected by a five-place grid penalty handed down after the Dutch Grand Prix, forcing him to start from P10 despite qualifying fifth. Nevertheless, the British driver delivered a solid recovery, crossing the line behind George Russell in sixth place. Speaking to the media after the race, the Briton gave his take on the events.

Lewis Hamilton believes Ferrari could have tried a different strategy

Lewis Hamilton reflected on what could have been improved, stating that an undercut on Russell might have been a better tactical choice. He acknowledged the current limits of Ferrari’s pace compared to the Red Bull and McLaren cars. “I don’t think we have the speed to fight for the podium right now. We’re still around fourth or fifth. Perhaps, with an exceptional performance, we might sneak onto the podium occasionally. There’s definitely a chance eventually, but in terms of pure pace, we’re not there yet. Today I felt strong and happy. In hindsight, maybe we should have attempted an undercut on George Russell. Staying long didn’t pay off, but it’s something we will learn from,” he explained.

Despite a commendable performance, Lewis Hamilton felt the team could have taken a bit more risk with their strategy. His approach has evolved and is beginning to show small gains in lap time compared to teammate Charles Leclerc. “It went well. Not bad at all. Honestly, I couldn’t ask for more. A great first stint and some good overtakes. I don’t think we could have gone further, but staying long didn’t work. On the positive side, I learned a lot about the car today, and I’m gradually adapting more and more. With the way I’m approaching things, I hope we can keep improving,” Lewis Hamilton added at the end of the Italian Grand Prix weekend.

First Monza in Ferrari colours leaves a mark

Competing at Monza in front of the passionate Tifosi clearly made an impression on Hamilton. The British driver expressed his gratitude to the fans, highlighting how special it was to race solidly in front of them. “Driving like this in front of the fans is… it’s incredible to drive here under this flag! I didn’t deserve to be on the podium today, so I won’t go up there, but I will probably head to the pit wall to see them!” – he pointed out.

Lewis Hamilton’s Monza debut in red may not have delivered a podium, but his performance showcased his skill, adaptability, and growing comfort in the Ferrari SF-25, while also providing the team with valuable points and insights for the remainder of the 2025 Formula 1 season.
