In August, Abass Baraou captured the WBA interim light middleweight world championship with a superb performance against defending champion Yoenis Tellez. With this victory, the Oberhausen native has definitively established himself among the world’s elite – and now the exceptional talent has even been officially elevated to full-fledged world champion by the oldest boxing organization in the world!

Previous titleholder Terence Crawford of the USA dethroned super middleweight world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez with a unanimous decision victory last Saturday in Las Vegas. According to WBA rules, Crawford was stripped of his light middleweight belt after moving up the weight class, thus declaring the 30-year-old Baraou, as the reigning interim champion, the world champion.

Abass Baraou, WBA Light Middleweight World Champion: “This is a dream come true for me! I’ve always fought to become a world champion, and now I’ve finally achieved it. I knew even before my fight against Tellez that I could probably become a full-fledged world champion. Nevertheless, the confirmation is simply amazing! I can hardly wait to defend my title.”

Kalle Sauerland, Global Head of Boxing at Wasserman: “With the victory against Tellez and the promotion to WBA world champion, Abass has finally reached the absolute elite of the sport – and he totally deserves it! Germany finally has a world champion again! Abass’s career is like something out of a Rocky movie; he fought his way to the top like a warrior! Some of the biggest stars from the USA box in his weight class. This opens up the possibility for truly big fights in America!”
