ATLANTA — Nearly 200 student-athletes from nine conferences met at the 24th annual HBCU Championships at the South Fulton Tennis Center, highlighting a thrilling weekend of college tennis in which the North Carolina Central men and Jackson State women earned the team titles.
The North Carolina Central men earned 82 total team points, good for a 25-point edge over runner-up Alabama State (57) to unseat back-to-back champions in Tennessee State. It marked the first team title for North Carolina Central in 11 seasons. The Eagles were propelled to the team title thanks to a number of standout individual performances, as the duo of Kareem Hakim and Leo Fortier-Gariepy reached the Flight A doubles final and Naresh Bharathy and Antoni Pankowski won the Flight B doubles final. Bharathy also beat fellow Eagle Rodrigo Alves in the Flight B singles final on Sunday afternoon.

The Jackson State women cruised to their team title, racking up an incredible 122 total points, a 51-point advantage against runner-up Alabama A&M (71). The Tigers had their fingerprints all over Sunday’s final slate, as teammates Paula Corbalan and Victoria Linkovski met in the Flight A singles final, while Isabella Benavides and Polina Georgieva battled in the Flight C singles title match. Though Corbalan and Benavides provided the only individual titles while in Atlanta, the Tigers also had both Linkovski and Helen Hernandez reach the Flight A doubles final and Mariia Iordanova and Daniela Tovar in the Flight B doubles final.
