For the second time since the contentious trade that sent him to the Golden State Warriors, Jimmy Butler is set to square off against his former team. The reunion promises to be anything but comfortable, as the lingering tension from his departure still hangs over the Miami Heat organization.
With the spotlight firmly fixed on the veteran forward, all eyes will be on how he handles the pressure of returning to his old stomping grounds.
Why Is Erik Spoelstra Done Talking About Jimmy Butler?
Steve Kerr’s team will face the Miami Heat at Kaseya Center on Wednesday night, and unsurprisingly, the focus has been on Butler’s return. When asked about the veteran forward’s reappearance in South Beach, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra quickly shut down the question, showing his frustration with the ongoing storyline.
“We already have done the game, so how many games do we have to play for it not to be the big storyline?” Spoelstra asked the media.
This isn’t the first time Butler has faced the Heat since the trade. He previously scored 11 points with six boards and two assists in an ugly 112-86 loss during the 2024-25 season. Butler’s breakup with Miami was a slow and painful process. He made it clear to Pat Riley that he wanted a trade, and multiple reports indicated his attitude rubbed some teammates the wrong way.
Despite the history, his former teammates are trying to move on. When asked about Butler, Heat forward Jaime Jaquez Jr. downplayed the drama. “I’m sure the media and the public have their own feelings. But for us, we did our thing,” Jaquez told the Miami Herald. “We played our games, we went there, they went and been here, kind of moved on. I think both guys are enjoying their new time. And we’re here, they’re there, and we’re taking it as another game.”

Heat star Bam Adebayo was even more direct, stating that the team has put the past behind them. “You kind of block it out,” Adebayo added. “You move forward in life. We got a great team playing great basketball, and you want to continue that rather than try to chase a headline.”
Meanwhile, Butler is thriving in the Bay Area. He’s averaging 20.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 1.7 steals per game on 53.5% shooting for Steve Kerr’s team. This performance has been critical, especially with Stephen Curry likely missing Wednesday’s game after tweaking his ankle in a road loss to the Orlando Magic. With Curry sidelined, Butler will be in charge of doing most of the heavy lifting for his team. Whether that will be enough to get a win against his former squad remains to be seen.
