Apart from new signings, Manchester United also need to address the futures of several players who may not have a future at the club, with Jadon Sancho being at the top of that list.
In 2021, the talented winger arrived in Manchester for a record £73 million, but failed to impress in his debut season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He started the following season well under new manager Erik ten Hag, but certain issues led to him being given time off by the coach.
Hopes were high for Sancho to shine in the 23/24 season, but his training performances disappointed the manager, who publicly criticized him after a match against Arsenal.
Following this, the 24-year-old reacted poorly, accusing the manager of scapegoating him on social media, while his camp suggested that other players were receiving preferential treatment.
Sancho-EtH saga
Despite being asked to apologize, Sancho refused and was subsequently excluded from the first team. He was later loaned back to his former club, Borussia Dortmund, in January, where he helped them reach the Champions League final.
Dortmund is interested in keeping him, but they cannot meet United’s asking price of £40 million. Juventus is also interested but is hoping for a reduced fee or another loan deal, which United is reluctant to agree to.
INEOS, the owners of Dortmund, have even offered Sancho’s services to Premier League rivals like Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea, but it is unlikely that a domestic transfer will happen.
With INEOS deciding to keep Ten Hag as the manager, it seems that Sancho has no future at Old Trafford, and an exit appears inevitable.
According to The Manchester Evening News, Sancho is expected to join pre-season training at Carrington starting on July 8, unless a permanent solution is found before then.
Pre-season training starts on Monday
“Manchester United anticipate Jadon Sancho reporting for pre-season training on Monday.
“Sancho, 24, has not trained with the first team since being excluded by manager Erik ten Hag in September, and it is uncertain if he will participate in the senior squad’s sessions next week.”
It remains to be seen if Sancho will be willing to train under the manager after the issues from last season. The new technical director, Jason Wilcox, is a supporter of Sancho, having worked with him at Manchester City.
Sancho could potentially go on strike to push for a move and not return to Manchester, while the new co-owners will be hoping to avoid further distractions by finding a permanent resolution. Mason Greenwood is also facing a similar situation. United has a challenging task ahead.
