SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Playing in the second game of the Puerto Rico Clasico, the Kenyon College women’s basketball team took on King’s College on Tuesday morning.

Thanks to a stand out performance from sophomore Susannah Zimmerman along with a strong outing from Antonia Marzini, the Owls battled in the second half to take the lead and never let up, ending its trip with a 66-55 victory.

The three ball was working early for Kenyon, who shot 42.9 percent from beyond the arc in the first quarter. In the early goings of the game, Alyssa Gest and Marzini drained triples to give their team a 10-9 advantage at 3:34.

The Owls closed the first on an 8-4 run, led by Rae Oberster with two points and another three from Kiana Mollabashy. At the end of one, Kenyon led 18-13.

King’s College, who hails from the Middle Atlantic Conference in Pennsylvania, came back with its best offensive stretch of the game, netting 17 points while shooting 55.6 percent from the floor and sinking six from the charity stripe. The Monarchs held the Owls to just 9 points in the second, shooting 25 percent from the field and not getting a three to fall. At the half, King’s held a 30-27 advantage.

Kenyon came out of the break shooting much better, hitting at a 53.3 percent clip from the floor in the third. After the Monarchs expanded its lead to seven points at the 7:47 mark, the Owls battled back to keep the team within reach, with Marzini and Zimmerman combining for eight points in the third. After Eva Winston drilled a three with 35 seconds left in the quarter, Kenyon was up 44-43.

The fourth quarter was all Owls, outscoring the Monarchs 22-12 in the final 10 minutes. Kenyon amassed its best shooting percentage of the game, hitting at a 57.14 percent mark. The squad was also able to capitalize on turnovers in the fourth, cashing in for eight points. Mollabashy led the effort with five points in the fourth, while the duo of Zimmerman and Marzini combined for 10. In the end, the Owls took a comfortable lead en route to a 66-55 win.

Zimmerman ended with 16 and Marzini with 13, both their second best outputs of the season thus far. Mollabashy joined the duo in double figures, while leading the team with seven rebounds. Oberster added nine to contribute to 34 off the bench points.

Kenyon’s record improves to 4-7 with the win. The Owls will return to Ohio to take on Denison University on Saturday, January 3 at 1:00 p.m. from Granville in the team’s second North Coast Athletic Conference matchup of the season.
