WNBA: Dearica Hamby continues to shine for the Los Angeles Sparks
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Los Angeles Sparks have had a tough year with a record of 5-15, but there have been some bright spots in this dark season.

Dearica Hamby continues to shine as the team’s best player, and the Sparks recently pulled off a remarkable win against the Las Vegas Aces, ending their eight-game losing streak with a score of 98-93 in overtime. Here are some positive developments in Los Angeles:

Dearica Hamby, Olympian

Although Cameron Brink’s absence due to injury is unfortunate, it has opened up an opportunity for Dearica Hamby. With Brink unable to compete in the Olympics for Team USA in the 3×3 competition, Hamby has been selected to fill her spot and represent the Americans in Paris.

Jay Demmings, the USA Basketball 3×3 national team director, expressed his thoughts on the situation:

We are excited to welcome Dearica Hamby to the USA 3×3 Women’s National Team and look forward to our collaboration. Our thoughts are with Cameron Brink as she focuses on her recovery.

Hamby’s performance for the Sparks has been outstanding, with career-high averages of 18.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Her impressive play has not gone unnoticed, as she has been selected for her third All-Star team.

Hamby’s elevated level of play is a well-deserved recognition for a team that has faced challenges this season.

The eight-game losing streak has ended

Despite the personal achievements, the Sparks had been on an eight-game losing streak before their recent victory against the Aces. The win was particularly significant as the Aces were on a six-game winning streak.

Led by Hamby and McDonald, the Sparks overcame the odds in an overtime thriller. McDonald’s stellar performance, with a career-high 23 points, played a crucial role in the victory.

McDonald’s aggressive play against Kelsey Plum, who was criticized for selective defense, contributed to the Sparks’ success against the Aces.

What’s next for LA?

While the Sparks face challenges in achieving a positive win-loss record, there have been promising developments. Hamby’s contract extension through 2025 and McDonald’s strong contribution in the recent win against the Aces offer hope for the team’s future.

The Sparks may aim to finish July on a strong note and potentially make a push for a playoff spot after the Olympic break, despite their current position. The recent win has sparked optimism for the team’s prospects.

Maintaining a sense of hopeful optimism can be beneficial in challenging times.
