Erik Spoelstra Stands Firm After Bam Adebayo’s Historic Night

Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra has made it clear he has no regrets about how the closing moments of Bam Adebayo’s historic 83-point performance unfolded.

The Heat center delivered the second-highest scoring game in NBA history during Miami’s 150–129 victory over the Washington Wizards earlier this week, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point performance while surpassing Kobe Bryant’s famous 81-point night.

But the final minutes of the game sparked debate across the basketball world.

With Miami comfortably ahead late, the Heat continued feeding Adebayo the ball while also intentionally fouling Washington players several times to regain possession and extend the game. The strategy allowed Adebayo to keep attacking and eventually reach the historic total.

Spoelstra was unapologetic when asked about the situation.

“I apologize to absolutely no one,” Spoelstra said Thursday. “Period.”

The Miami coach believes critics overlooked how dominant Adebayo had already been long before the late-game drama began.

Adebayo exploded early, scoring 31 points in the first quarter, finishing the first half with 43, and entering the fourth quarter with 62 points. By the time the final minutes arrived, he had already reached 77.

“There was a moment, and when there’s a moment in time like that, it’s carpe diem,” Spoelstra said. “You have to go for it, and that was just thrilling. And I’m honored that we were all able to be a part of it.”

Several coaches around the league shared similar feelings.

Denver interim head coach David Adelman said the spectacle was simply part of basketball when a player reaches such rare territory.

“He made the extra pass in the fourth quarter when he had 60. He blocked a shot. He was still playing the game,” Adelman said. “When you get to 70, I’m sorry, man, like all bets are off. … I thought it was really cool.”
