When Caitlin Clark, the dynamic Indiana Fever guard and 2024 WNBA No. 1 overall pick, suited up for Team USA during FIBA World Cup qualifying, expectations were sky-high.

Fans were eager to see the young star take the reins as a starter, but that hasn’t been the case consistently. Clark’s role has quickly become a hot topic among basketball followers, with many questioning the team’s lineup choices and coaching decisions.

Clark’s early appearances for Team USA have been impressive. In her debut against Senegal, she posted a remarkable 17 points and 12 assists in just 19 minutes, showcasing not only her scoring ability but also her vision as a playmaker.

She also contributed 14 points and six assists against New Zealand, proving that even in limited minutes, she can impact the game immediately. These performances highlight why many fans believe she deserves a more prominent role.

Fan backlash grows over lineup decisions

Despite her clear talent, veteran Chelsea Gray has frequently been chosen as the starting point guard, sparking outrage among some supporters. Gray, a four-time WNBA champion and six-time All-Star, brings a wealth of experience, but many feel that Clark’s energy, scoring, and playmaking could give Team USA an extra edge from the tip-off.

Fans quickly took to social media to express frustration, questioning head coach Kara Lawson’s decision-making. One fan asked, “What’s the justification for starting Chelsea Gray over Caitlin Clark?” while another joked that Clark’s bench role meant they could “start games a bit late and not miss much.”

The coaching rationale, however, likely centers on experience and strategic planning. Gray’s career provides leadership and stability, especially in high-pressure international games.

Meanwhile, Clark is still transitioning from a collegiate star to professional and international competition, so her minutes are being managed to maximize team success while gradually integrating her into the squad.

Even with limited starts, Clark has made an immediate impact off the bench, electrifying fans and contributing crucial points and assists. Her presence has elevated attention on women’s basketball, proving that her influence extends beyond scoring.

As Team USA continues its dominant run in qualifying, the debate over Clark’s role, whether as a starter or a super-sub, is likely to persist.
