WNBA: Copper, Cloud and Griner stand out for surging Mercury
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

After a convincing win against the Dallas Wings, 100-84, the Phoenix Mercury (12-10) still have three more games before the All-Star/Olympic break. Their next challenge is an away game against the Indiana Fever on Friday, July 12 (7:30 p.m. ET, ION).

The Mercury fell short against the Indiana Fever on the last day of June, losing 88-82. They are looking to bounce back from that defeat and also overturn their recent loss to the Connecticut Sun, who beat them 83-72 on July 1. The rematch with the Sun is set for Sunday, July 14 at Mohegan Sun Arena (1 p.m. ET, ABC). The Mercury will then face the Washington Mystics on Tuesday, July 16 (11:30 a.m. ET, League Pass) to close out the first half of the season.

A tough road trip with three games before the break is not ideal, but if the Mercury can build on their recent three-game winning streak and secure three more victories, it will definitely boost the team’s morale. A 15-10 record at this stage of the season would be a positive sign for a team that had some uncertainties at the beginning of the season.

Despite the challenges, there is plenty of optimism in Phoenix. Here are three key reasons why:

Worth every penny

Kahleah Copper has proven to be a valuable addition to the Mercury, providing much more value than her namesake. Acquired in a major trade during the offseason, she has been a standout performer for the team, averaging a career-best 23.0 points per game, the second-highest in the league.

Copper has scored 30 or more points in seven games this season, including a 32-point performance in the recent win against the Wings. She has been a key offensive asset for the Mercury and will be crucial in upcoming games, especially with her defensive contributions against tough opponents like the Fever.

Copper’s defensive efforts will also be vital for the team’s success moving forward. Her all-around game will be tested against top opponents as the season progresses.

Cloud control

Natasha Cloud has been instrumental in maintaining stability for the Mercury this season. While Copper’s scoring grabs the attention, Cloud’s contributions, especially in playmaking and defense, have been crucial for the team’s success.

Cloud leads the team in assists, averaging a career-high 7.2 per game. She also excels in rebounds, steals, and blocks, showcasing her versatility on both ends of the court. Her efficient scoring, particularly inside the arc, has also been a key asset for the team.

In a recent game against the Los Angeles Sparks, Cloud had a standout performance, scoring a career-high 31 points along with multiple rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. Her all-around game continues to benefit the Mercury.

Brittney Griner’s presence has been instrumental in the stellar performances of Copper and Cloud this season. Despite concerns about her form at the start of the season, Griner has proven to be a dominant force for the Mercury.

In the games she has played, Phoenix has a strong record of 8-4. Griner’s impact on both offense and defense is evident, as the team performs significantly better with her on the court.
