The Twins have made some roster moves today, designating right-hander Caleb Boushley for assignment. They have also selected the contract of infielder Diego Castillo to take the place of injured infielder Jose Miranda on the active roster. Miranda is out with a low back strain and has been placed on the 10-day injured list. These moves were reported last night.
Boushley, 30, only appeared in one game for the Twins this season. He joined the team on a minor league deal in January but wasn’t called up until May. In his one appearance, he struggled, giving up two runs on three hits in two innings. He has been pitching as a starter in Triple-A, where he has a 4.68 ERA in 16 starts. Despite a solid 20.8% strikeout rate and a remarkable 4% walk rate, Boushley has had some issues with giving up home runs, allowing ten so far this season.
Originally drafted by the Padres in the 33rd round in 2017, Boushley went on to join the Brewers before making his MLB debut in late September last year. He performed better in his lone outing with the Brewers, striking out five batters and allowing just one run in 2 1/3 innings. With a career 4.62 ERA in 87 Triple-A appearances, Boushley has proven to be a reliable option for teams in need of pitching depth.
The Twins now have a week to either trade Boushley or attempt to pass him through waivers. If he clears waivers, they can assign him outright to the minors, though Boushley may choose free agency after being outrighted by the Brewers last year.
