In 2022, A League of HER Own made its debut in Toronto, offering girls aged 13 to 18 in the Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) an opportunity to play basketball and build friendships across neighborhoods.
Today, the program has grown significantly, now located at the MLSE LaunchPad, a state-of-the-art facility in Toronto that focuses on youth development through sports, education, and wellness programs, promoting healthy and active lifestyles. 🏀 The background
Although A League of HER Own is a newer initiative, TCHC has been utilizing sports to support youth for years. Midnight Basketball league was introduced in Toronto back in 2013, bringing together boys aged 14 to 19 for free basketball games on Friday nights, providing them with a safe environment during late hours. However, Midnight Basketball offers more than just basketball practice.
Since its establishment, the program has focused on both personal and physical growth, offering transportation, meals, life skills workshops, and even special appearances from the Toronto Raptors to the boys.
👊 The evolution
Inspired by the success of Midnight Basketball in Toronto, A League of HER Own was created in 2022 as a girls-only program to bridge the gap in sports participation between girls and boys.
A high number of Canadian girls are dropping out of sports, with 62% of adolescent girls not participating in sports according to the 2020 Rally Report. Girls are three times more likely to quit sports compared to boys, with reasons including low confidence, negative body image, and feeling of not belonging.
A League of HER Own took inspiration from Midnight Basketball but tailored the program to prioritize girls’ unique needs.
✏️ What the kids are saying
Feedback from previous participants shows positive outcomes, with almost 58% of last year’s participants planning to return this summer. They found supportive role models in coaches and staff members, increased their physical activity, and formed lasting friendships.
Amina, a participant from 2023, expressed, “Connecting with other girls who share my interest in basketball and athletics created a positive and inclusive environment. I made great friends and look forward to joining again.” Sabrina, another participant, mentioned, “The experience boosted my confidence, helped me make lasting friendships, and contributed to my personal growth.”
