TEMPE, Ariz. – Sixteen teams remain in contention for an NCAA Championship title across the Men’s and Women’s bracket after the opening rounds of the NCAA Division I Team Championships.
Both No. 1 seeds across the Men’s and Women’s draws punched their ticket to the Super Regionals over the weekend. The Wake Forest Men downed both Kentucky and Gardner-Webb to reach their eighth Sweet 16 since 2015, while the Georgia Women swept Florida A&M and Georgia Tech to secure their 100th NCAA Tournament win in program history.
The defending champions, TCU, remain in the hunt as well, beating Abilene Christian and Oklahoma, while the No. 2 seed for the women, Texas A&M, slid past Quinnipiac and UCSB.
Both UCLA squads are through to Super Regionals after a drama-filled weekend. The UCLA Women survived a thrilling back-and-forth affair in the Second Round, upsetting No. 15 Vanderbilt in Nashville, 4-3. Knotted at 3-3, the Bruins’ tilt with the Commodores came down to court five between UCLA’s Ahmani Guichard and Vandy’s Sophia Webster, the daughter of UCLA head coach Stella Sampras Webster. Guichard emerged victorious in a third-set tiebreaker, winning 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6), to keep the Bruins alive.
The UCLA Men, playing in their home state in the Berkeley regional, beat UCSB and No. 11 Cal to set up an all-L.A. Super Regional against the cross-town Trojans this weekend.
The Bruins are one of eight schools to have both of their men’s and women’s programs reach the Sweet 16, joined by Ohio State, Texas, Stanford, Virginia, NC State, Tennessee and Texas A&M.
The Tennessee Men pieced together the most impressive comeback of the weekend, erasing a 3-0 deficit to beat No. 17 Duke, 4-3, on Saturday in Knoxville. After dropping the doubles point and courts 3 and 4 in singles, the Volunteers rattled off four consecutive wins to stun the Blue Devils. Tied 3-3, the match came down to No. 1 singles in Tennessee’s Alex Kotzen and Duke’s Pedro Rodenas, where the Blue Devils jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the the third set. Remarkably, Kotzen won the next seven games to post a 7-5 third set score, winning 7-5, 6-7 (3), 7-5, lifting the Vols to their sixth straight Super Regional.
The Oklahoma State Women took the Norman regional by storm, knocking off host and No. 6 seeded Oklahoma, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon, reaching their third Sweet 16 in the past four tournaments. It was also their biggest win in the NCAA Tournament since a 4-3 victory over No. 1 Cal in 2016. The Cowgirls will now host Stanford, which is coming off its best performance of the season after upsetting host and No. 11 Texas Tech, 4-1, in Lubbock.
Elsewhere in the Women’s bracket, No. 5 North Carolina is set to see ACC foe No. 12 NC State for the third time this season. The Tar Heels have taken the first two meetings by a combined score of 8-4, the most recent of which coming in the semifinals of the ACC Championships on April 19.
Similarly, a pair of Big 12 heavyweights will meet for the third time this year in the Men’s Super Regionals, as No. 15 UCF will visit reigning champion and No. 2 TCU in Fort Worth.
