On Sunday, July 21, the boxing world was shocked by the news of the passing of former World Boxing Association lineal Bantamweight world champion Richie Sandoval. He suffered a heart attack at the age of 63.
Sandoval, born in Pomona, Southern California, on October 18, 1960, was of Mexican descent and was drawn to boxing as a teenager. He had an impressive amateur career, winning national championships and representing the US in international competitions.
After turning professional, Sandoval quickly rose in the ranks and, with a perfect record, earned a shot at the WBA Bantamweight title against champion Jeff Chandler. In a surprising upset, Sandoval defeated Chandler and claimed the title.
Despite his success, Sandoval faced challenges with weight management and eventually lost his title in a tough fight against Gaby Cañizales. Following this defeat, Sandoval never returned to the ring.
Years later, Sandoval was inducted into the Nevada State Boxing Hall of Fame, honoring his contributions to the sport. His passing marks the end of a remarkable career, with 29 wins and 17 by knockout, solidifying his legacy as a true bantamweight fighter.
