Seattle Storm star Jewell Loyd emphasized that her mid-range scoring ability is at the core of her game. She stated, “It’s my bread and butter.”
Loyd and the Storm are gearing up for a Wednesday home game against the Las Vegas Aces, who are two-time WNBA champions, in what is expected to be an exciting and high-scoring matchup between two top teams in the league.
Las Vegas (13-7) currently leads the league in scoring with 89.4 points per game, while Seattle (14-7) is third with 84.1 points. The Aces also lead the WNBA in field goal percentage (45.5) and have the fewest turnovers (12.1), while the Storm top the league in steals (9.8) and blocked shots (5.8).
In their last game, the Storm secured an 84-71 victory at home against Chicago, with Nneka Ogwumike contributing 24 points and 13 rebounds, while Loyd added 20 points. Skylar Diggins-Smith also played a key role with 15 points and eight assists, surpassing 4,500 career points.
Ogwumike praised Diggins-Smith, referring to her as the “general” of the team and highlighting her importance as the muscle and brain on the court, especially as a point guard in the league.
On the other hand, Las Vegas is coming off a dominant 104-85 win against Dallas, with A’ja Wilson leading the scoring with 28 points and 10 rebounds, supported by four players in double figures.
The Aces have won seven of their last eight games, including impressive double-digit victories against Seattle and Connecticut. The return of star point guard Chelsea Gray has been beneficial, as the team has realized they are targets for every opponent.
Coach Becky Hammon stressed the importance of not becoming complacent, acknowledging that other teams are giving their all against the Aces. Wilson is putting up impressive numbers with 27 points, 10.9 rebounds, and a league-leading 2.7 blocked shots per game.
The teams have split their two meetings this season.
