In the Beginning
Raised in a basketball-centric environment, Powers carried a ball everywhere, always ready to join a game. Her passion for basketball was evident early on as she aspired to become a professional basketball player.
“Basketball has always been my love. I’d carry my ball and shoes everywhere, eager to hoop whenever an opportunity arose,” Powers reflected. “It’s been my passion, and I’m grateful for my parents’ support, especially my dad, who took on basketball despite knowing nothing about it. Look where I am now.”
Powers’ dad, Juan, initially a boxer, embraced basketball to nurture his daughter’s talent. Their bond is strong, with Powers acknowledging her father as her best friend and a pillar of support.
Starting her competitive basketball journey in the 8th grade with AAU ball, Powers later secured a scholarship to play for her hometown Michigan State Spartans.
“Aerial’s energy was the first thing that caught my eye,” recalled Suzy Merchant, former Michigan State Head Coach, on recruiting Powers. “Her athleticism and infectious spirit stood out. She possessed the X factor and leadership qualities essential for the team. I wanted to coach her.”
