Afrikaanse Hoêr Meisieskool defended their title and were again crowned champions of the Botho stream at the 2024 DStv Schools Netball Challenge, while Khombindlela High School claimed the top prize in the Ubuntu stream as the competition came to a close on Saturday, 13 July, 2024.
The Pretoria team beat C&N Sekondêre Meisieskool 33-21 in a final that saw both teams put on quite the performance. The victory means that Afrikaanse Hoer Meisieskool is now one of two teams to have defended their title, Limpopo’s Hlabi High School being the other team to claim this feat.
Speaking on SuperSport.com, Afrikaanse Hoer Meisieskool’s captain Amia Roux said it was hard to put into words just how happy her team won the title.
“We are ecstatic. It is a feeling you cannot describe to anyone. It was a tough game and well done to Oranje, they played well. It is always nice to play against them. I am proud of the team, we are just so happy. It was important to win to give a tribute to every player that played in the Affies dress before us,” says Roux.
Meanwhile, the Ubuntu winners, Khombindlela High School were able to overcome a tough challenge from Lambalati Secondary School to claim their first-ever title.
The KwaZulu-Natal team had great form in the competition with six wins in eight games in the competition that ran from 12-13 July, 2024.
Goal shooter Nelisiwe Msweli, who sustained an injury during the semifinals, played through the pain and said on SuperSport.com that she would do what she had to do, to be on the winning side.
“I was in pain and I still am feeling pain right now. I had to forget about the pain and focus on my game. I needed to win this game because I hate losing. I couldn’t let myself down, I had to keep my head up. I am so excited to have won this final, because we had promised our principal that we would win this, and make our province proud.”
Meanwhile, Hluvka High School managed a come-from-behind victory to finish in third place and claim bronze in the competition in the Ubuntu stream. Hoêrskool Menlopark claimed third place in the Botho stream.
