Aggreko and Formula 1 have taken a significant step forward in their ambitious journey toward achieving Net Zero by 2030, announcing a multi-year partnership between the world-leading provider of temporary power solutions and the prestigious motorsport organization. Starting from the 2025 season, this collaboration will bring cutting-edge, low-carbon energy generation systems to all European Grands Prix, reinforcing Formula 1’s commitment to sustainability. As part of this transformative deal, Aggreko will become an Official Provider of F1, underscoring the sport’s dedication to reducing its environmental impact.

The partnership between Aggreko and Formula 1 is built on a foundation of successful collaboration that began in 2023 when they first piloted a centralised power generation compound at the Austrian Grand Prix. This innovative system, which harnesses renewable energy sources such as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), biofuel, solar panels, and battery storage, resulted in a remarkable reduction of over 90% in carbon emissions within the Paddock, Pit Lane, and broadcast areas compared to the 2022 event. Its unique features, including the use of renewable energy sources and its significant carbon reduction, make it a game-changer in the field of sustainable energy solutions.

The system’s initial success at the Red Bull Ring spurred further trials at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2024, and it has since been implemented at other key events, including this weekend’s Grand Prix in Monza. The results have been consistently impressive, demonstrating the system’s capability to deliver substantial carbon reductions. As a result, from 2025 onwards, this centralised power generation system will be deployed across all European Grand Prix events, marking a significant milestone in Formula 1’s sustainability strategy and underlining the profound impact of the partnership on the sport’s environmental efforts.

This expansion to all European races will profoundly impact how energy is managed at these events. The system will generate sufficient power to eliminate the need for individual generators typically brought by Formula 1, F1 Teams, and the FIA. This includes powering essential areas such as garages, motorhomes, the Pit Wall, the Timing Room, the Formula 1 Event Technical Centre (ETC), and the International TV Compound, which houses all F1 host broadcasters. By centralising power generation, the system will drastically reduce the number of generators on-site, leading to fewer emissions from transportation and enhanced operational efficiency.

Ellen Jones, Head of ESG at Formula 1, highlighted the significance of this initiative:

Ellen Jones, Head of ESG at Formula 1, highlighted the significance of this initiative, stressing the role of the entire paddock in achieving the Net Zero by 2030 commitment. She said, “The entire paddock is part of our Net Zero by 2030 commitment, and solutions like the low-carbon energy generation system combine technological innovation with coordinated action. In practice, this means we can achieve significant carbon reductions in this space – and we look forward to continuing to showcase how we can deliver more sustainable events.”

Robert Wells, President of Aggreko Europe and Aggreko Event Services, echoed this sentiment:

“Aggreko has an unrivalled track record of delivering power transition solutions across the globe in the most demanding, challenging, and mission-critical environments to ensure our clients’ needs are consistently met to the highest standards. As a global leader, we have an important role to play in the energy transition, and we’re thrilled that Formula 1 has chosen Aggreko to help them on their journey to be Carbon Net Zero by 2030. We look forward to continuing to work with Formula 1 and energising change for a positive future together.”

This partnership is a testament to the technological advancements in sustainable energy solutions and a crucial element in Formula 1’s broader strategy to lead the charge in environmental responsibility within the world of motorsport. With the full rollout of this system in 2025, Formula 1 is set to set a new standard in how global sporting events can operate sustainably, paving the way for a greener future in the industry.
