The Las Vegas Aces showed great camaraderie on Tuesday evening as they quickly rallied around guard Kate Martin after she sustained a distressing injury to her lower right leg.
Martin’s injury occurred with 1:19 left in the first quarter of the game against the Chicago Sky. Despite their best efforts, the Aces (16-8) could not overcome the scoring abilities of Chennedy Carter and Angel Reese, resulting in a 93-85 upset by the Sky (10-14).
While dribbling up the court, Martin appeared to slip and fell to the ground, clutching her right ankle in visible pain and distress.
Immediately, Martin’s teammates, including the entire Aces bench, surrounded her on the court, using towels to shield her from the cameras.
In a post-game news conference, Aces star A’ja Wilson expressed her commitment to protecting and supporting Martin, emphasizing that she is part of their team and deserves privacy.
Martin was assisted off the court and returned in the second half wearing sweatpants over her uniform but did not reenter the game.
Coach Becky Hammon mentioned Martin’s toughness but was unable to provide further details on her injury.
Martin’s injury coincides with the WNBA’s Olympic break, and the Aces’ next game is scheduled for Aug. 17 against the New York Liberty (21-4).
