The Las Vegas Aces’ start to the season has been turbulent, to say the least. While the two-time champions were among the favorites at the beginning of the season to hang another Championship Banner, that hasn’t been the case.

Becky Hammon’s side has started the season with a 7-7 record, placing them 7th in the WNBA as of June 25. Although the Aces are having to adapt to life without Kelsey Plum after her move to Los Angeles, one reason for the slump has been the absence of the MVP, A’ja Wilson.

After Wilson suffered a hit to the face by Los Angeles Sparks’ forward Dearica Hamby, the center was placed under concussion protocol by the league. She cleared it after missing just one game, and the six-time All-Star has since returned to the floor and turned the Aces back to their winning ways, with the latest one coming on a special night for Wilson.

Another Record for A’ja Wilson As Aces Take Care of Connecticut

The Aces got their seventh win of the season against the Connecticut Sun, defeating them in a 26-point blowout at home.

While the Sun’s performance lacked luster, Wilson shone bright, scoring 22 points and breaking yet another record. The reigning MVP became the fastest player to reach 5,000 points in the WNBA in just 238 games.

The record was previously held by Breanna Stewart, who reached the landmark in 242 games. Stewart had surpassed Diana Taurasi (243 games) last season and held the record for just under a year.

The golden moment for Wilson came in the second quarter with 4:04 remaining, when she scored her fourth field goal of the night, and the home fans rose to their feet while the players congratulated Wilson.

“It meant a lot to me. It’s been a special season for us,” Wilson said after the game. “It’s been a lot of ups and downs, but when you can hit a milestone like this in a league like this, I can’t let it go unnoticed. So I’m grateful. I’m blessed.”

Having claimed yet another record, it won’t be far-fetched to believe Wilson might steal the WNBA’s All-Time scoring crown from Taurasi in the future, but that is a long way into the future. But for now, another record seems within reach.

Wilson is hunting for her 4th MVP trophy this season. After winning the title in 2020, 2022, and 2024, the center is again expected to be a contender in the race. A fourth MVP award would make her the player with the most MVP awards, as she is currently tied at 3 with Lisa Leslie, Lauren Jackson, and Sheryl Swoopes.

For now, however, the Aces and Wilson will be focused on steadying the ship as the All-Star break nears.
