A’ja Wilson, the three-time WNBA MVP and star of the Las Vegas Aces, has agreed to a historic six-year contract extension with Nike, as reported by ESPN on Tuesday.
Having joined Nike’s roster in May, the two-time WNBA champion has already announced a forthcoming apparel line and signature shoe with the sportswear giant. The first edition of the “A’One” shoe is expected to be released this spring, just before the 2025 WNBA season starts on May 16th.
Wilson joins top tier of Nike athletes
Wilson’s new deal is reportedly one of the highest-paid shoe endorsement contracts in women’s basketball. This places the 28-year-old alongside other basketball stars like Sabrina Ionescu, Caitlin Clark, and JuJu Watkins in Nike’s lineup.
While the exact details of Wilson’s contract are still to come, the $28 million eight-year deal that Clark signed was, as of its April signing, the richest sponsorship contract in the sport.
Wilson’s May sneaker drop will mark the beginning of her signature shoe journey, raising hopes for similar success as Ionescu’s. The Liberty guard debuted her second shoe in June, with both editions being worn by WNBA and NBA stars.
A no-brainer signing for Nike
Nike’s decision to sign Wilson comes as no surprise, given her dominating performance in the 2024 season. Setting records for single-season rebounding and scoring, Wilson became the first player to break 1,000 points in a season.
She achieved three MVP awards, becoming only the fourth player to do so and the first to win by unanimous vote since Cynthia Cooper in 1997. Wilson also led Team USA to their eighth-straight Olympic gold medal, earning MVP honors in Paris.
